Sister Mary Humphries with one of her students.Sister Mary HumphriesSister Mary Humphries, PBVM came to Birmingham, Alabama in 1960 at the invitation of Archbishop Toolen, bishop of Mobile-Birmingham. She taught at St. Augustine inner city Catholic school for twelve years. Due to the closure of the school Sister Mary was transferred to Christ the King, Daphne and remained there for about 8 years. Then she was missioned to St. Joseph Catholic School in Ensley, Birmingham, AL where she taught until its closure. In 1997 Sister Mary taught Math and Science for one year in Our Lady of Sorrows in Homewood, AL. then at the invitation of Bishop Foley, she became administrator of St. Stanislaus Parish in Wylam, AL. Sister Mary is now happily retired in Adamsville, AL.  

Sister Maur SampsonSister Maura Sampson, PBVM joined the community at Christ the King Convent, in Daphne, Alabama. Sister Maura came from Presentation Sister Maura SampsonConvent Thurles, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. After teaching for some years at Christ the King School, Sister Maura was missioned to St. Joseph Catholic School in Ensley, AL where she was the 8th grade teacher until its closure in 1997. From 1997-2008 Sister Maura was appointed by Bishop David Foley to St. Patrick Catholic Parish in Adamsville, AL where she was missioned as Pastoral Minister and D.R.E.

Fifty years ago four Sisters came from Presentation Convent, Mullingar, Co. Meath, Ireland at the request of Archbishop Toolen of Mobile-Birmingham, Alabama to open St. Joseph Catholic School in Easley, Birmingham, AL. The sisters, four in number, began teaching at St. Joseph School in 1958. The Sisters who came were Mother M. Gertrude Shortall, Sister de Lourdes Grennan, Sister Delores Waldron and Sister Rosario Flanagan, followed by Mother Joseph Griffin and Sister Carmel Dunne in 1960. Later Sister Consilio O’Keeffe, Sister Margaret O’Brien, Sister Mary Savage, Sister Bridget, Sister Annunciata Murtagh, Sister Patrick Sisters Mary and MauraNolan, Sister Maureen Nolan, Sister Marie Ryan, Sister Imelda Lawlor, Sister Maura Sampson, Sister Mary Humphries, Sister Philippa Wall, Sister Ann Lyons joined the teaching staff. St. Joseph School closed in 1997 owing to financial reasons and segregational problems.

In 1960 two sisters came from Presentation Convent, Lismore, Co. Waterford to open and staff a Catholic school in the inner city of North Birmingham, AL. The Sisters who pioneered this venture were Sister M. Evangelist Walsh, R.I.P. and Sister Mary Humphries – Adamsville. In 1961 Sister Assumpta O’Rourke joined the Sisters and later came Sister de Lourdes Galvin and Sister Benignus O’Gorman. They taught in St. Augustine School for twelve years. This school closed in the 1970’s owing to financial reasons and segregational problems.
